Bahrain Polytechnic And Think Pink Bahrain Sign MoU

Bahrain Polytechnic has taken the initiative as an applied higher educational institution to support Think Pink Bahrain – Bahrain Breast Cancer Society, following a fruitful cooperation between both parties since 2014.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Bahrain Polytechnic and Think Pink Bahrain will see a collaboration between both parties to embed service-learning into the programmes offered at the Polytechnic, and for the embarkation on joint research projects, in addition to supporting the charity’s annual breast cancer awareness campaign.

The project that led to the signing was the Public Service Announcement (PSA), an internship project produced by the visual design students made for Think Pink Bahrain. The video, the first of its kind, addresses the misconceptions of breast cancer in the Arabian Gulf with an aim to raise awareness, encourage early detection and help locals make better decisions for themselves and their families.

Dr. Mohamed Al Aseeri, Acting CEO of Bahrain Polytechnic, stated: “This is the first time Bahrain Polytechnic has signed with an agreement with a charity organization for the purpose of embedding service-learning in our programmes, as well as conducting a joint research to benefit the community. This falls under our Strategic Plan 2015-2019 to foster active and positive engagement with our stakeholders, including the National Higher Education Strategy 2014-2024.

“I would like to thank Think Pink Bahrain for their contribution to the Kingdom, and we as a Polytechnic will strive to support the charity and the community. In addition, our students will gain valuable experience through service-learning by conducting research and projects for the community.” concluded Dr. Al Aseeri.

Mrs. Julie Sprakel, Founder & President of Think Pink Bahrain, stated: “Think Pink Bahrain: Bahrain Breast Cancer Society has been collaborating with Bahrain Polytechnic since 2014, and have been invited to come and support already existing curriculum with their visual design and marketing schools during that time. It was a joint collaboration of mapping the needs of Polytechnic against the opportunities for supporting Think Pink Bahrain.

“The signing of the MoU today is the strongest form of collaboration and agrees incorporation of service learning within a curriculum moving forward- giving a powerful “out of class room” learning experience and perspective. This real life scope is beneficial for both the Charity and its participants and internationally, is one aspect of sustainable, high impact community engagement.

“An example of this collaborative partnership is seen clearly in the launch of the Arabic Public Service Announcement [titled “The decision is in your hands”], which we are proud to be part of. This powerful message- delivered by students gives another layer of the Charity’s mission and vision whilst portraying a local discourse.” Mrs. Sprakel concluded.

Think Pink Bahrain’s Vice President, Mrs. Tahera Al Alwai, stated: “We are extremely excited about this initiative, the first at such a national level. We have been impressed with the drive and support given, which only reflects the incredible caliber of both academic and administrative staff, along with the eagerness of the student body to engage with such a project. We look forward to initiating all aspects of the MoU.”

Dr. Mohamed Al Aseeri signed the MoU on behalf of Bahrain Polytechnic, while Mrs. Julie Sprakel signed on behalf of Think Pink Bahrain, in attendance of officials from both parties.
