European Commission invitation for Bahrain Breast Cancer Society

Breast cancer is not race, religion or class orientated. It is only with research, education, early intervention and public awareness that we can fight this disease.

Think Pink Bahrain is a non-profit organsiation that was founded by Ms. Julie Sprakel, in 2004. Over the years the money raised has been directed towards a number of areas that would better support the Kingdom in regards to breast cancer awareness, education and care. Initially donated over BD 120, 000 towards the National Mammography Drive initiated by the Ministry of health and Bahrain Cancer Society, the Charity became registered as the only stand alone breast cancer society in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Our governance is in accordance with the Ministry of Social Development along with collaboration with the Ministry of Health

What started as a one off event to mark our Founder’s 30th birthday, is now a nation wide awareness campaign. Since inception, Think Pink Bahrain has raised over $US 1, 801, 849.68 (updated 2016) and falls within three of the Charity’s Funds: Awareness, Education and Research.

Members and volunteers of the Think Pink Bahrain team donate their time, expertise and business acumen to support the ongoing work of the Charity. The committee and executive board have been selected to compliment the Founders vision and enable Think Pink Bahrain to run efficiently and effectively thus ensuring the success of this mission

Vision

The core principle of Think Pink Bahrain’s philosophy is education. Education is the first step to prevention. When we educate our mothers, daughters, sisters and nieces, we can help them make informed decisions, which may ultimately save their lives. Our ongoing investment in education will enable the people of Bahrain to receive and have access to the best healthcare professions with a holistic approach to breast cancer treatment.

Mission

Think Pink Bahrain aims to empower people at grass root levels through collaboration with local affiliates to continue to promote the importance of education and screening programs and community based outreach projects.

JULIE SPRAKEL

Access to information and knowledge was the driving force behind starting the Charity in 2004. We have only come so far due to the belief from the community- this is what drives the team to think of innovative and collaborative projects that gives access everyone in the Kingdom. Our accessibility, transparency and approach has broken down many of the local taboos and started a discourse in relation to breast cancer. I have grown a lot since the inception of Think Pink Bahrain, and have had the privilege to work, support and care for many people in the Kingdom, which gives me the strength to dream big. Our achievements and accolades are due to the community support- for which I am truly thankful.

TAHERA AL ALAWI

My reason for joining think pink Bahrain was because I believed in the vision and mission of Julie and wanted to be part of establishing the first stand along breast cancer NGO in the kingdom. The charity has come far and I am proud to be part of such a charismatic and passionate team.

Joining Think Pink Bahrain has not only enabled me to be part of a much needed breast cancer society in the country, it has also helped me empower Bahraini women by raising awareness & providing guidance that was lacking before

SELIA NICOLAOU

SELIA NICOLAOU

I decided to join Think Pink Bahrain after couple of my close family members and my best friend were diagnosed with breast cancer. I wanted to honour the two survivors as well as a loved one who was lost to cancer. I always read about the Think Pink Bahrain functions and activities in local media and admired their efforts and outreach they created to spread awareness and simultaneously provide support for patients in any way they could. Having retired in 2012 I endeavoured to be part of the Think Pink Bahrain group and offer my help in any capacity. Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer and grateful for Think Pink Bahrain, their efforts and amazing dedication towards fighting cancer.

ANNE- MARIE O’SHEA

ANNE- MARIE O’SHEA

Having enjoyed volunteering with non-profit organisations in Ireland I was eager to get involved with the local community on moving to Bahrain a number of years ago. Through informal enquiries Think Pink was mentioned as one of the most active and inclusive charities on the island. Since joining, I have found working with Think Pink to be a thoroughly enriching experience. I have had the opportunity to utilise and further develop my professional skills and knowledge and meet many new people with similar values and interests.

CHARLOTTE PEDERSON

I joined Think Pink to give a bit back of all the information and support I received when I had breast cancer. I hope to add value with some of the experiences I have had here in Bahrain.

Testimonials

From a small seed, a mighty trunk may grow’ is the perfect description depicting the transformation we have witnessed with Think Pink. In just over 10 years this homegrown charity has transformed the lives of many and touched the hearts of all. As a school, RVIS has ensured that our community has been involved in annual charity and awareness raising activities and our support has not gone unnoticed. In 2013, RVIS was proudly presented with the charity’s first Annual Community Engagement Award. In our school mission statement, we strive to be “ethically guided contributors to a global society and our close collaboration with Think Pink has allowed us to demonstrate this.
